Here at Arenal Hills, we are fortunate to be at the epicenter of one of the most bird-rich ecosystems on earth. Costa Rica is home to 600 species year round and more than 200 that migrate from temperate zones.  That’s an amazing variety when compared to the 700 species that can be found in all of North America. Here is a list of the best birdwatching attractions to inspire you:

  1. Sarapiqui Eco Observatory

Stretching across more than 10 acres in Costa Rica’s north-central town of La Virgin, this observatory contains around 200 species of birds, which include golden hooded tanagers and broad-billedmotmots.

  1. Curi-Cancha Reserve

Situated near the Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve, the Curi-Cancha Reserve is considered one of the best birdwatching territories in Costa Rica. You can see the trogans, motmots, toucans, and quetzals fly above the trails that wind through this 237-acre reserve.

  1. Wilson Botanical Gardens

This botanical garden is famous for some rare and exotic birds like brown-billed scythebill, snowy bellied hummingbird, and gray necked wood rail. Wilson Botanical Gardens is a part of the Las Cruces Research Station and is located near the northwestern border with Nicaragua.

  1. Tortugero National Park

Stretched across 47,000 acres on the north-eastern Caribbean coast, this national park is home to some of the rarest species of birds. You can boat down the park’s canals to get a view of herons, grebes, and roseate spoonbill.

  1. San Gerardo de Dota

Also known as Los Quetzales National Park, this place is home to around 200 species of birds. As the name suggests, this national park is famous for quetzals, along with hummingbirds, woodpeckers, and tanagers.
